It is located on the central coast of the province and integrated into the region of the Costa del Sol, between MijasCosta and BenalmÃ¡dena.The municipality has an area of 10,37kmÃÂ²,almost entirely urbanized, and an average altitude of 5 masl. It covers a narrow coastal strip of about 8 km long, with beaches oriented southeast.With 75,856 inhabitants according to the 2014 census it is the fifth largest municipality in the province and one of the highest densities, with more than 7,500 inhabitants per KmÃÂ².Founded by the Phoenicians, Fuengirola was occupied by Romans, Byzantines, Visigoths and Arabs among other peoples, until its final incorporation into the Corona de Castillain 1485. Slowed down its growth due to intense piracy suffered in the area for centuries, it was constituted municipality after segregating of Mijas in 1841, remaining a small fishing village. Currently, Fuengirola is an important tourist center with around 250,000 people during the summer months, whose economy centers on this sector. Its solid and long tourist way since the 70s, attached to a wide range of entertainment and activities for the whole familyhave turned Fuengirola one of the most important points and greater well-being of the entire Costa del Sol.
